WHAT IS CAT RENAL FAILURE?

Renal failure occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to filter toxins from and balance fluids within the body.
Renal failure is broken into two categories: chronic renal failure and acute renal failure.

THE TWO TYPES OF RENAL FAILURE

CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE

Chronic renal failure is not reversible, but it is manageable.
Chronic renal failure is the progressive destruction of your cat’s kidneys.
Mostly a disease of older cats, chronic renal failure progresses slowly but is ultimately terminal.
Increased blood pressure due to hyperthyroidism is a common culprit in the development of chronic renal failure in geriatric cats.

ACUTE RENAL FAILURE

Acute renal failure tends to be more aggressive and shows symptoms within a few hours or days after the initial onset.
Acute renal failure can be reversed with aggressive treatment.
Eating poisons, such as lilies, raisins, grapes, radiator fluid, certain pain pills like ibuprofen, and extreme dehydration can cause acute renal failure.
Acute renal failure is an emergency.
If you suspect your cat has been exposed to any of the above substances and appears sick, contact your veterinarian immediately.
If your cat has been diagnosed with chronic renal failure, we can help!
