Ingredients

Active ingredients: Chamomile, L-Tryptophan, Passion Flower, Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Magnesium, Valerian Root, Flaxseed (carrier), Cod Liver Oil.

Inactive ingredients (chews): Rice Flour, Sunflower Lecithin, Rice Bran, Oat Groats, Vegetable Glycerin, Salmon Meal, Fruit Juice, Natural Grain Dextrin, Sorbic Acid, Brewer's Yeast, Vegetable Oil.

About the Key Ingredients

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla): A well-documented calming botanical traditionally used to ease nervousness, restlessness, and digestive upset associated with anxiety. Chamomile's apigenin constituent binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, producing a mild anxiolytic effect without sedation. In TCVM, chamomile's bitter and slightly cool nature supports the Liver's free-flow of Qi and calms Liver Wind, making it appropriate for anxiety presentations with Liver Qi constraint or rising Liver Yang.

L-Tryptophan: An essential amino acid and the dietary precursor to serotonin, the primary neurotransmitter governing mood, social behavior, and emotional equilibrium. L-Tryptophan crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to 5-HTP and then to serotonin in the brain, providing nutritional support for the serotonergic system that underlies emotional balance and calm behavioral presentation. Well-researched in both human and veterinary anxiety support contexts.

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata): A botanical traditionally used to support nervous system calm and ease situational anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disturbance. Passion flower's flavonoid constituents, including chrysin, have demonstrated GABA-receptor-modulating activity, supporting nervous system inhibition and calm without sedation. A classical European and Western herbal anxiolytic with a long history of use in situational stress support.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1): An essential B-vitamin that plays a central role in nervous system function and neurotransmitter synthesis. Thiamine deficiency is associated with neurological dysfunction and heightened stress reactivity; supplemental thiamine supports normal nervous system function and stress resilience. Included in July Third to provide foundational nervous system nutritional support alongside the herbal and amino acid calming ingredients.

Magnesium: An essential mineral and natural NMDA receptor antagonist that plays a key role in nervous system regulation, muscle relaxation, and stress response modulation. Magnesium deficiency is associated with heightened anxiety, hyperreactivity, and sleep disturbance; supplemental magnesium supports a calmer, more regulated nervous system baseline. Works alongside L-Tryptophan and Thiamine as part of the formula's nutritional nervous system support layer.

Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis): One of the most widely used and well-documented calming botanicals in both human and veterinary herbal medicine. Valerian's valerenic acid and isovaleric acid constituents modulate GABA receptor activity, supporting the nervous system's inhibitory tone and promoting a calmer, more settled behavioral state. In TCVM, valerian (Xie Cao) is used to calm the Shen (Spirit/Mind), anchor floating Yang, and address Heart and Liver pattern anxiety presentations. Specifically appropriate for noise-phobia, situational anxiety, and fear-based behavioral presentations.

Flaxseed (carrier) and Cod Liver Oil: Provide essential omega-3 fatty acids (ALA from flaxseed, DHA/EPA from cod liver oil) that support neurological membrane integrity and anti-inflammatory function, contributing a foundational brain and nervous system nutritional support layer to the formula's calming action.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is July Third different from Herbsmith Calm Shen, and which one should I use?

July Third is a situational, fast-acting calming formula designed to be given 1-2 hours before a specific predictable stressor such as fireworks, a vet visit, travel, or a grooming appointment. It is not intended for daily ongoing use and works best as an event-specific calming tool. Calm Shen is Herbsmith's daily long-term calming formula based on classical TCVM Shen-calming herbs; it is designed for dogs with chronic or baseline anxiety that requires cumulative, daily support rather than situational relief. For dogs with both chronic anxiety and predictable situational triggers, the two formulas can complement each other: Calm Shen as the daily foundation and July Third for specific high-stress events. Consult your veterinarian to determine which formula is most appropriate for your dog's behavioral pattern.

When and how do I give July Third?

Give the weight-appropriate dose 1-2 hours before the anticipated stressful event. Chews can be tossed directly to your dog or concealed in food such as cheese, a meatball, or dipped in coconut oil. Dosing may be repeated every 12 hours if needed. Small chews are sized for dogs up to 30 lbs; large chews are sized for dogs 30 lbs and over. Not for puppies under 6 months of age or dogs under 5 lbs.

Is July Third safe to use with other medications or supplements?

July Third contains valerian root and passion flower, both of which have GABA-modulating activity, and L-Tryptophan, which supports serotonin production. Do not use in conjunction with CNS depressants, and use caution when combining with anti-anxiety drugs or MAO inhibitors, as additive effects on the nervous system are possible. Do not use within 48 hours of surgery or anesthesia. Safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been established. A veterinary examination is recommended prior to use, and your veterinarian can advise on compatibility with your dog's current medications and health status.

Does July Third cause sedation or grogginess?

July Third is not a sedative and is formulated specifically to promote calm without sedation. The calming ingredients - chamomile, valerian, passion flower, L-Tryptophan, magnesium, and thiamine - work through GABAergic, serotonergic, and nervous system nutritional support mechanisms that promote a more relaxed and settled behavioral state without impairing alertness or motor function. Dogs given July Third should remain alert, responsive, and themselves while feeling less reactive to stressors. If unusual sedation or lethargy is observed, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian.
