Dr. Marc Smith and Dr. Casey Damron are veterinarians and the founders of PET | TAO. Their interest in whole-pet care led them to study Eastern food therapy and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine at the Chi Institute under Dr. Huisheng Xie.
The course brings together their veterinary backgrounds and experience using food therapy in clinical practice, offering an introduction for caregivers who want to better understand the philosophy behind the bowl.
If you’re curious about holistic nutrition for your dog or cat and want more context than an ingredient list alone provides, this course offers a place to begin. It is designed to introduce food-therapy principles and help you approach nutrition conversations with greater understanding.
Food energetics and nutritional completeness are different considerations. A diet should meet your pet’s species, life-stage, and individual health needs as well as any traditional energetic goals. Have homemade recipes and supplement plans reviewed by your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist before feeding them.
This is an educational course, not a personalized feeding plan or veterinary consultation. It does not replace examinations, prescribed diets, medications, or surgery, and it does not promise to prevent disease or guarantee a particular health outcome.
“I think eating for balance is important and mostly overlooked in allopathic medicine.”
Kris Dailey, DVM
“I believe you folks got it right. I like all the educational stuff you are putting out there. I am having fun reviewing the Modules and just reviewing what I do know!”
Suzanne Walski, DVM
“Interesting. Good approach, useful way to introduce people to the concepts.”
Patty Ungar, DVM

The four modules introduce the instructors’ food-therapy background, Yin-Yang and Five Element theories, traditional energetic patterns and food preparation, and case studies. The focus is understanding Eastern food-therapy principles and how they inform a holistic approach to nutrition.
The course is taught by PET | TAO founders Dr. Marc Smith and Dr. Casey Damron, veterinarians who studied TCVM and Eastern food therapy at the Chi Institute under Dr. Huisheng Xie.
The course introduces food selection and preparation concepts, but it is not an individualized diet formulation service. Ask your veterinarian to review recipes, portions, and supplements for nutritional completeness and suitability before changing your pet’s diet.

Does this address Food energetics and which foods to avoid with cancer patients for example?
That's a great question, thank you for asking! This book explains TCVM food energetics according to a pet's individual constitution, but does not go into cancer specifics. We do have a free ebook on dog cancer: What Every Dog Owner Should Know About Cancer. We also have an article on how our founding TCVM-trained veterinans help dogs suffering from cancer: TCVM Veterinarians Share Holistic Dog Cancer Protocol.
