About the Key Ingredients

Bacillus and Lactobacillus Blend: These spore-forming and lactic acid-producing probiotic strains are among the most researched beneficial bacteria for gastrointestinal health. Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis are heat-stable spore formers that survive the digestive tract effectively, while Lactobacillus acidophilus helps maintain a favorable intestinal environment and supports the gut lining.

FOS (Fructooligosaccharides): A prebiotic fiber that selectively feeds beneficial bacteria in the large intestine, helping established probiotic populations thrive. FOS is not digested by the host animal and passes intact to the colon where it ferments and supports microbial balance.

Digestive Enzyme Blend: Amylase breaks down starches; protease breaks down proteins; lipase breaks down fats; cellulase breaks down plant cellulose; bromelain (from pineapple stem) and papain (from papaya) are plant-derived proteolytic enzymes traditionally used to support protein digestion and digestive comfort. Together, these enzymes support thorough macronutrient breakdown and efficient absorption.

Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum spp.): Traditionally used in herbal practice to support digestive warmth and comfort. In TCVM, cinnamon is considered warming in nature and is used to support Yang and move Qi through the digestive tract.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): A well-known digestive botanical traditionally used to support stomach comfort and motility. Ginger is warming in nature and is used in both Western herbal practice and TCVM to support digestive function and ease occasional GI discomfort.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Traditionally used to soothe and support the gastrointestinal mucosa. In TCVM, licorice is considered a harmonizing herb that moderates the actions of other herbs in a formula and supports the Spleen and Stomach.

Potential Drug Interactions

Microflora Plus contains digestive herbs - including cinnamon, ginger, and licorice - that may interact with certain medications, particularly those affecting blood glucose, blood pressure, or corticosteroid metabolism. Pets on prescription medications should use this supplement under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs and cats remains limited.

Pets with chronic health conditions or those on ongoing prescription medications may benefit from periodic bloodwork monitoring as recommended by their veterinarian. Your veterinarian can evaluate whether this supplement is appropriate based on your pet's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Microflora Plus support and which pets can use it?

Microflora Plus supports digestive health, healthy gut flora, and bowel comfort in both dogs and cats. It is particularly useful during periods of dietary transition, environmental stress, or whenever a pet needs additional support for stool consistency and digestive function. It is not intended to diagnose or treat any disease and is best used as part of a regular wellness routine.

How is Microflora Plus administered and what is the correct dose?

Capsules can be given whole or opened and the contents mixed into food. For dogs, dosing is based on body weight: 1/2 capsule per day for dogs under 20 lbs, 1 capsule per day for dogs 21-40 lbs, 2 capsules per day for dogs 41-80 lbs, and 3 capsules per day for dogs over 81 lbs. Cats receive 1/2 capsule per day. Consult your veterinarian if you have questions about the appropriate dose for your pet's specific situation.

How long does it take to see results?

Many pet owners report noticing improvements in stool consistency and digestive comfort within 1-2 weeks of consistent daily use. For pets with more significant or long-standing digestive concerns, it may take 4-6 weeks of regular supplementation before the full benefit is apparent. Results can vary depending on the individual pet, diet, and any underlying factors your veterinarian has identified.

Can Microflora Plus be combined with other supplements, formulas, or medications?

Microflora Plus is frequently used alongside other Herbsmith formulas and general wellness supplements. If your pet is on prescription medications or has a diagnosed health condition, it is best to consult your veterinarian before adding any new supplement to their routine. Your veterinarian can confirm compatibility based on your pet's full health picture and current medication regimen.
