  • Heart Yang warming, Blood invigoration, and channel unblocking: Rou Gui warms and tonifies Kidney Yang, warms the Heart Yang, disperses Cold, and unblocks the Heart channels; Chuan Xiong invigorates Blood, moves Qi, dispels Wind, and unblocks the channels; together they form the formula's Heart Yang-warming and Blood-invigorating layer, addressing the Heart channel obstruction and Yang deficiency component of the Heart Qi deficiency pattern and ensuring the tonification strategy is supported by appropriate channel-warming and Blood-moving action
  • Heart calming, Spirit settling, and Essence astringing: Bai Zi Ren nourishes the Heart, calms the Spirit, and moistens the intestines; Yuan Zhi calms the Heart, settles the Spirit, opens the Heart orifice, and transforms Phlegm; Wu Wei Zi astringes Qi and Essence, calms the Spirit, and tonifies the Kidney; together they form the formula's Heart-calming and Spirit-settling layer, addressing the Spirit disquiet and Essence leakage that accompany Heart Qi deficiency patterns
  • Blood nourishment and Dampness draining: Dang Gui nourishes Blood and invigorates Blood, providing the Blood nourishment needed to address the Blood deficiency component of the Heart Qi deficiency pattern and prevent the formula's warming herbs from consuming Blood; Fu Ling drains Dampness, supports the Spleen, and calms the Heart, ensuring the Qi-tonifying strategy does not generate Damp accumulation while contributing additional Heart-calming action

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

Heart Qi Tonic is a ten-herb formula organized around a Heart Qi-tonifying and Spleen Qi-supplementing layer (Dang Shen, Huang Qi, Gan Cao), a Heart Yang-warming and Blood-invigorating layer (Rou Gui, Chuan Xiong), a Heart-calming and Spirit-settling layer (Bai Zi Ren, Yuan Zhi, Wu Wei Zi), and a Blood-nourishing and Dampness-draining layer (Dang Gui, Fu Ling):

  • Dang Shen (Codonopsis pilosula) - Codonopsis root: Tonifies Spleen and Stomach Qi, nourishes Blood, and generates fluids; the formula's primary Qi-tonifying chief herb, providing the Spleen and Stomach Qi tonification that supports Heart Qi production and supplementation; Dang Shen is the gentler, clinically preferred substitute for Ren Shen (ginseng) in tonifying formulas for chronic deficiency patterns, appropriate for the sustained Heart Qi support strategy of this formula
  • Huang Qi (Astragalus membranaceus) - Astragalus root: Tonifies Protective Qi and Spleen Qi, raises Yang, and strengthens the exterior; the formula's secondary Qi-tonifying herb, supplementing the Spleen Qi foundation and supporting the Protective Qi that the Heart Qi deficiency pattern has impaired; Huang Qi's Yang-raising action also contributes to lifting and supporting Heart Yang in the context of Heart Qi deficiency
  • Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) - Licorice root: Tonifies Spleen Qi, nourishes the Heart, moderates urgency, and harmonizes all the herbs; the formula's harmonizing herb with a specific Heart-nourishing and Spleen Qi-supplementing action, contributing to the Heart Qi-tonifying strategy while ensuring the formula's warming and moving herbs are moderated
  • Rou Gui (Cinnamomum cassia) - Cinnamon bark: Warms and tonifies Kidney Yang, warms the Heart Yang, disperses Cold, leads Fire back to its source, and unblocks the Heart channels; the formula's Heart Yang-warming herb, addressing the Yang deficiency and Cold obstruction component of the Heart Qi deficiency pattern; Rou Gui's ability to warm the Heart channels and lead Yang back to the Lower Jiao prevents floating Yang and supports the Heart's warming and propulsive function; do not use in patients with Yin deficiency, as Rou Gui's warming nature may aggravate Yin deficiency Heat signs
  • Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) - Ligusticum rhizome: Invigorates Blood, moves Qi, dispels Wind, and unblocks the channels; the formula's primary Blood-invigorating and channel-unblocking herb, addressing the Blood stagnation component of the Heart Qi deficiency pattern and ensuring the tonification strategy is supported by appropriate Blood movement through the Heart channels; Chuan Xiong's combined Qi-moving and Blood-invigorating action makes it the most appropriate channel-unblocking herb for Heart Qi deficiency patterns with associated Blood stasis
  • Bai Zi Ren (Biota orientalis) - Biota seed: Nourishes the Heart, calms the Spirit, and moistens the intestines; the formula's primary Heart-nourishing and Spirit-calming herb, addressing the Spirit disquiet that accompanies Heart Qi and Blood deficiency patterns; Bai Zi Ren's sweet, neutral, and moistening nature provides Heart nourishment without the drying or warming side effects of stronger calming herbs, making it appropriate for the long-term Heart Qi support strategy
  • Yuan Zhi (Polygala tenuifolia) - Polygala root: Calms the Heart, settles the Spirit, opens the Heart orifice, and transforms Phlegm; the formula's Spirit-settling and Heart orifice-opening herb, addressing any Phlegm obstructing the Heart orifice and the Spirit disquiet arising from Heart Qi and Blood deficiency; Yuan Zhi's combined Spirit-calming and Phlegm-transforming action ensures the formula addresses both the Spirit disturbance and any Phlegm accumulation component of the pattern
  • Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra chinensis) - Schisandra fruit: Astringes Qi and Essence, calms the Spirit, tonifies the Kidney, and nourishes the Heart; the formula's Essence-astringing and Spirit-calming herb, preventing the leakage of Heart Qi and Essence that accompanies Heart Qi deficiency patterns while simultaneously calming the Spirit and tonifying the Kidney; Wu Wei Zi's sour, astringent nature consolidates the Qi and Essence being tonified by the formula's Qi-supplementing herbs
  • Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) - Dong quai root: Nourishes Blood and invigorates Blood; the formula's Blood-nourishing herb, addressing the Blood deficiency component of the Heart Qi and Blood deficiency pattern and providing the Blood nourishment needed to prevent the formula's warming herbs from consuming Blood and Yin; Dang Gui's Blood-invigorating action also contributes to the formula's overall Blood-moving strategy
  • Fu Ling (Poria cocos) - Poria sclerotium: Drains Dampness, supports the Spleen, and calms the Heart; the formula's Dampness-draining and Heart-calming herb, preventing the Qi-tonifying herbs from generating Damp accumulation while contributing additional Heart-calming action to complement Bai Zi Ren and Yuan Zhi; Fu Ling's gentle Spleen-supporting action ensures the Spleen Qi foundation for Heart Qi production is maintained throughout the treatment course

Potential Drug Interactions

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Heart Qi Tonic used for in TCVM?

Heart Qi Tonic is indicated for dogs and cats with TCVM patterns of Heart Qi deficiency with Blood deficiency and Heart Blood stagnation, where insufficient Heart Qi has impaired the Heart's ability to propel Blood through the vessels, resulting in fatigue, Spirit disquiet, and channel weakness associated with Heart Qi and Blood deficiency. Holistic veterinarians frequently prescribe it as a foundational TCVM Heart support formula for Heart Qi deficiency patterns across a range of clinical presentations. Do not use in patients with Yin deficiency, as the formula's warming herbs may aggravate Yin deficiency Heat signs. Your authorizing veterinarian will confirm the appropriate TCVM pattern diagnosis before recommending Heart Qi Tonic.

How is Heart Qi Tonic administered, and what are the dosing guidelines?

Dosing varies by body weight; your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance. For dogs and cats using the 7500mg concentrated tincture, the guideline is 10 drops per 5 to 10 lbs of body weight twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. Each full dropper contains approximately 20 drops. Store refrigerated for best results. Do not use in patients with Yin deficiency. May be used for up to 6 months, or as directed by your veterinarian.

What is Yang Xin Tang, and how does Heart Qi Tonic relate to it?

Yang Xin Tang (Nourish the Heart Decoction) is a classical Chinese medicine formula designed to tonify Heart Qi and Blood, calm the Spirit, and address the combined Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, and Spirit disquiet pattern associated with Heart weakness. Jing Tang's Heart Qi Tonic (Xin Qi Bu) is a modified Yang Xin Tang adapted for veterinary TCVM practice, maintaining the formula's core Heart Qi-tonifying and Spirit-settling strategy while adjusting the herb composition to address the specific patterns of Heart Qi deficiency and Blood stagnation most commonly seen in dogs and cats. The modification reflects the TCVM approach of adapting classical human formulas to the physiological and energetic characteristics of animal patients, retaining the classical framework while optimizing herb selection for clinical effectiveness in veterinary applications.

Why is Heart Qi Tonic contraindicated in patients with Yin deficiency?

Heart Qi Tonic contains Rou Gui (cinnamon bark), a strongly warming and Yang-tonifying herb that warms the Heart channels, tonifies Yang, and disperses Cold. In patients with Yin deficiency, the Yin is already insufficient to balance and anchor Yang, and the addition of a strongly warming herb such as Rou Gui may aggravate the Yin deficiency by further consuming Yin and generating or worsening deficiency Heat signs. TCVM pattern discrimination distinguishes Heart Qi deficiency from Heart Yin deficiency: Heart Qi deficiency is characterized by cold signs, fatigue, and Yang channel weakness, while Heart Yin deficiency is characterized by warmth signs, restlessness, and night sweating. Heart Qi Tonic's warming and Yang-tonifying strategy is appropriate for the former and contraindicated for the latter. Your authorizing veterinarian will determine whether your pet's Heart pattern is a Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency, or combined pattern before recommending this formula.

An absolute miracle herb

Heart Qi Tonic has been an absolute godsend for our elderly chihuahua since she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She is more than 2 years past her 6-month prognosis thanks to this product. So grateful for our competent vet who knew how to properly dose this product for our sweet 16 princess.

Costly and Did not seem to help the issue

I wanted it to help so much, but I didn’t notice a change. I have a personal long history with TCM and love TCM, and yet I think three are some times when herbs are still not addressing the root cause and therefore they don’t offer anything except a hope.
