What It Supports

  • Lung and Kidney Qi tonification: Tonifies both Lung and Kidney Qi, addressing the combined Lung-Kidney Qi deficiency pattern in which the Lung cannot descend Qi to the Kidney and the Kidney cannot receive and hold the Qi sent down by the Lung, resulting in chronic breathlessness, weak respiration, and fatigue
  • Lung Yin nourishment: Nourishes Lung Yin to address the Yin deficiency component that accompanies chronic Lung Qi deficiency, moistening the Lung and respiratory passages and addressing the dryness, scanty Phlegm, and heat signs associated with Lung Yin deficiency
  • Lung Qi redirection: Redirects and descends Lung Qi through the formula's Qi-descending herbs, restoring the Lung's primary function of descending Qi from the upper body to the Lower Jiao and Kidney, directly addressing the rebellious or obstructed Qi that generates wheezing and labored breathing
  • Phlegm resolution: Resolves the Phlegm that accumulates when Lung Qi fails to descend and transform fluids normally, clearing the respiratory passages and supporting the Lung's function of regulating the water passages

TCVM Principles

  • Primary action: Tonify Lung and Kidney Qi, nourish Lung Yin, redirect Lung Qi
  • Classical antecedent: Modified Ge Jie San from Yuan Heng Liao Ma Ji (Yuan-Heng's Therapeutic Treatise of Horses) written by Yu Benyuan and Yu Benheng in 1608
  • Contraindications: Use with caution during pregnancy
  • Warning: Stop administration immediately if the patient develops diarrhea, vomiting, or other unusual signs

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

Breathe Easier B is a ten-herb modification of the classical Ge Jie San framework, replacing the original's Ge Jie (Gecko) chief with a broader combination of Lung-Kidney tonifying, Lung Yin-nourishing, Qi-descending, and Phlegm-resolving herbs for Lung and Kidney Qi deficiency with Yin deficiency and impaired Lung Qi descending:

  • Dang Shen (Codonopsis pilosula) - Codonopsis root: Tonifies Spleen and Lung Qi and nourishes Blood; the formula's primary Lung and Spleen Qi-tonifying herb, addressing the Lung Qi deficiency root through direct Lung Qi tonification and through the Spleen-Lung (Earth-Metal) relationship; strengthens the Spleen's production of Qi that nourishes the Lung
  • Rou Gui (Cinnamomum cassia) - Cinnamon bark: Warms the Kidney Yang, assists Kidney Yang in receiving Lung Qi, and disperses Cold; the formula's primary Kidney Yang-tonifying and Qi-receiving herb; in TCVM, the Kidney is responsible for receiving the Qi that the Lung descends - Kidney Yang deficiency impairs this receiving function, causing breathlessness and Qi to rebel upward; Rou Gui warms and strengthens the Kidney Yang specifically to restore its Qi-receiving function, which is the distinctive Kidney tonification strategy in respiratory formulas
  • Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus) - Ophiopogon tuber: Nourishes Lung and Stomach Yin, clears Heat, and moistens dryness; the formula's primary Lung Yin-nourishing herb, addressing the Yin deficiency component that accompanies chronic Lung Qi deficiency; moistens the Lung and respiratory passages, addresses the dry cough, scanty Phlegm, and heat signs of Lung Yin deficiency, and works with Bai He as the primary Lung Yin-nourishing pair
  • Bai He (Lilium brownii) - Lily bulb: Nourishes Lung Yin, clears Lung Heat, and calms the Shen; works with Mai Men Dong as the formula's primary Lung Yin-nourishing pair; specifically valued for its combined Lung Yin-nourishing and Lung Heat-clearing actions, addressing the Yin deficiency heat component of chronic Lung conditions; Bai He also has a calming action that addresses the restlessness and anxiety that sometimes accompanies chronic respiratory conditions
  • Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra chinensis) - Schisandra berry: Astricts the Lung, nourishes Kidney Yin, and calms the Shen; the formula's primary Lung-astricting and Kidney-nourishing herb, preventing further leakage of Lung Qi and supporting the Kidney's Yin to complement the formula's Kidney Yang-warming strategy through Rou Gui; the combination of Rou Gui (warming Kidney Yang) and Wu Wei Zi (nourishing Kidney Yin) reflects the TCVM principle that Kidney treatment requires attention to both Yin and Yang
  • Zi Su Zi (Perilla frutescens) - Perilla seed: Descends Qi, expels Phlegm, and moistens the intestines; the formula's primary Qi-descending herb, directly restoring the Lung's descending function that is disrupted by Lung Qi deficiency; works with Xing Ren as the primary Qi-descending and Phlegm-resolving pair, addressing the rebellious Qi and Phlegm accumulation that generate wheezing and labored breathing
  • Xing Ren (Prunus armeniaca) - Apricot seed: Descends Lung Qi, alleviates cough and wheezing, and moistens the intestines; works with Zi Su Zi as the primary descending pair, with a specific action on alleviating cough and wheezing through Lung Qi descending; Xing Ren's descending and moistening nature complements Zi Su Zi's stronger Qi-breaking and Phlegm-resolving action
  • Zhe Bei Mu (Fritillaria thunbergii) - Zhejiang Fritillaria bulb: Clears Heat, resolves Phlegm, and opens the chest; the formula's primary Heat-Phlegm-resolving herb, addressing the hot, sticky Phlegm that accumulates in Lung Yin deficiency patterns when deficient Heat condenses fluids into Phlegm; Zhe Bei Mu is preferred over the gentler Chuan Bei Mu for formulas with a stronger Phlegm-clearing requirement
  • Qian Hu (Peucedanum praeruptorum) - Peucedanum root: Descends Qi, expels Phlegm, and disperses Wind-Heat; the formula's supplementary Qi-descending and Phlegm-expelling herb, reinforcing the descending strategy of Zi Su Zi and Xing Ren while also addressing any Wind-Heat component in the Lung channel; its light, descending nature makes it a useful addition to the formula's multi-herb Qi-descending strategy
  • Jie Geng (Platycodon grandiflorus) - Balloon Flower root: Opens the Lung, expels Phlegm, and directs the formula upward to the Lung channel; the formula's channel-opening carrier herb, ensuring the formula's tonic, nourishing, and descending herbs reach the Lung channel; in classical Chinese medicine, Jie Geng's upward-floating nature makes it the standard carrier herb for formulas targeting the Lung and upper respiratory tract, and its Phlegm-expelling action contributes directly to clearing the respiratory passages

Potential Drug Interactions

Breathe Easier B contains Lung and Spleen Qi-tonifying herbs (Dang Shen), Kidney Yang-warming herbs (Rou Gui), Lung Yin-nourishing herbs (Mai Men Dong, Bai He), a Lung-astricting herb (Wu Wei Zi), Qi-descending herbs (Zi Su Zi, Xing Ren, Qian Hu), a Phlegm-clearing herb (Zhe Bei Mu), and a channel-opening herb (Jie Geng) that may interact with certain medications. Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark) may interact with antidiabetic and anticoagulant medications. Xing Ren (Apricot seed) should be used at recommended therapeutic doses; follow veterinarian guidance. Pets on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs, cats, and horses remains limited.

Medication categories warranting extra caution include antidiabetic medications, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, antihypertensive medications, and multiple concurrent prescription medications. Use with caution during pregnancy. Stop administration immediately if the patient develops diarrhea, vomiting, or other unusual signs. Use for up to 3 months, or as directed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on the patient's condition, medications, and laboratory results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Breathe Easier B used for in TCVM?

Breathe Easier B is used in TCVM for Lung and Kidney Qi deficiency patterns with Lung Yin deficiency and impaired Lung Qi descending - a pattern common in dogs, cats, and horses with chronic respiratory conditions involving both Lung weakness and Kidney failure to receive Qi. In TCVM, the Lung and Kidney have a critical functional relationship through Qi: the Lung descends Qi to the Kidney, and the Kidney receives and holds the Qi sent down by the Lung. When either organ is deficient, this Lung-Kidney Qi exchange is disrupted, generating chronic breathlessness, particularly on exertion, wheezing, and reduced respiratory capacity. Breathe Easier B addresses this combined Lung-Kidney pattern more comprehensively than formulas that target only Lung Qi deficiency. Use with caution during pregnancy, and stop administration immediately if the patient develops diarrhea, vomiting, or other unusual signs.

How is Breathe Easier B administered and dosed?

For horses using the 90g Concentrated Powder, give 3g (2.5 large scoops) twice daily; for the 600g Regular Strength Powder, give 10g to 20g twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. For dogs and cats using the 90g Concentrated Powder, give 0.1g to 0.25g per 10 to 20 lb body weight twice daily; for the 0.5g Concentrated Capsule format, give one capsule per 20 to 40 lb body weight twice daily; for small dogs and cats under 10 lbs, give one 0.2g concentrated capsule once daily; for the 600g Regular Strength Powder, give 0.5g per 10 to 20 lb body weight, or as directed by your veterinarian. Use for up to 3 months, or as directed by your veterinarian.

What is the classical source of Breathe Easier B, and what makes it unique?

Breathe Easier B is based on a modification of Ge Jie San from Yuan Heng Liao Ma Ji (Yuan-Heng's Therapeutic Treatise of Horses), written by the brothers Yu Benyuan and Yu Benheng in 1608 during the Ming dynasty. Yuan Heng Liao Ma Ji is one of the most important classical Chinese veterinary medicine texts specifically focused on equine medicine - a fitting source for a respiratory formula used in horses. The classical Ge Jie San traditionally uses Ge Jie (Gecko) as its chief herb, valued in TCVM for its potent Lung and Kidney Yang-tonifying and Qi-receiving properties. Jing Tang's Breathe Easier B modification replaces or supplements the traditional chief with a broader combination of Lung-Kidney tonifying, Yin-nourishing, and Qi-descending herbs appropriate for the combined Lung-Kidney Qi and Yin deficiency pattern it addresses in companion animal and equine patients.

Why does Breathe Easier B include Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark) in a respiratory formula?

Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark) is included in Breathe Easier B specifically to warm and strengthen Kidney Yang and restore the Kidney's ability to receive and hold the Qi descended by the Lung - a function called납Qi납 or receiving Qi in TCVM. In the Lung-Kidney Qi relationship, the Kidney's Yang-powered receiving function is just as important as the Lung's descending function: if the Kidney Yang is insufficient, the Kidney cannot grasp the Qi sent down by the Lung, and the Qi rebels upward, generating chronic breathlessness and wheezing that worsen on exertion. Rou Gui's warming, anchoring action on the Kidney Yang directly addresses this receiving failure, making it a classical addition to respiratory formulas for Lung-Kidney Qi deficiency patterns where Kidney Yang deficiency is a contributing factor. This is why formulas for chronic respiratory conditions with a Kidney component often include a warming Kidney Yang herb alongside the Lung-targeted herbs.

Amazing!!

This product is absolutely amazing!! My poor dog was on steroids for a long period of time because of COPD. As a result of the long-term steroid use, she gained a significant amount of weight, was severely bloated and had horrible flatulence. Her vet recommended this product in combination with a couple other "Jing Tang" supplements. I am so happy and grateful to say, thanks to "Concentrated Breathe Easier B" along with "Concentrated Lily Combination" & "Concentrated Bu Fei San", my baby girl was able to come off the steroids and is breathing so much better now. Unfortunately, these products are rather pricey, but, definitely worth it if you love your fur babies like I love mine.

Really help aging dogs

My German Spitz is 16yo, and has been having his trachea narrowing since he was 12yo. The western meds helps to open his airways but it makes him too active and he started biting on his paws bec he feels bored. We turned to TCM vet, and with acupuncture & this all natural herbal Breathe easier supplement, my boy is now breathing well, sleeping well & alert when he is awake. Its what i trust bec its not just chemicals.
