Each herb in Zhu Ling San contributes a targeted action to address damp heat in the lower burner and support healthy urinary function:
Zhu Ling San contains diuretic herbs (Zhu Ling, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, Hua Shi) and the yin-nourishing blood tonic E Jiao. Pets currently on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs and cats remains limited.
Medication categories warranting extra caution include diuretics, blood thinners or anticoagulant medications, immunosuppressive drugs, and pets managing multiple concurrent prescriptions. Your authorizing veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on your pet's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Zhu Ling San is indicated for damp heat patterns affecting the lower burner, particularly those presenting as urinary difficulty, frequent or painful urination, dark or scanty urine, or recurring urinary tract infections. It is also used when yin deficiency accompanies the damp heat pattern, making it appropriate for pets with chronic or recurring urinary issues.
Mix the powder directly into food or grain at the dose recommended for your pet's species and body weight. Dogs and cats typically receive the formula twice daily; horses receive two tablespoons twice daily for the first 20 days, then once daily for maintenance. Your authorizing veterinarian will confirm the appropriate dose and schedule for your individual pet.
Response time varies depending on the severity and chronicity of the condition. Some pets show improvement in urinary comfort and frequency within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use. Chronic or complex cases may require a longer course of treatment, and your veterinarian may recommend periodic reassessment to adjust the formula or dosing as your pet responds.
Combination with other TCVM formulas is common in holistic veterinary practice and should be guided by your authorizing veterinarian based on your pet's full pattern diagnosis. If your pet is on conventional medications, particularly diuretics or anticoagulants, veterinary oversight is especially important to monitor for any interactions and ensure the treatment plan is appropriate for your pet's overall health status.
