Herbsmith Rx Yu Ping Feng San for Cats, Dogs and Horses

Veterinary Authorization Required for TCVM Herbal Formulas - TCVM Pet Supply

Herbsmith Rx Yu Ping Feng San is a classical Chinese herbal formula recommended by holistic veterinarians to support immune defense and respiratory health in dogs, cats, and horses. Based on the traditional formula Yu Ping Feng San (also known as Jade Windscreen Powder, Jade Screen Eight, and Astragalus and Siler Combination), it augments the qi, stabilizes the exterior, and stops panting. This tonifying formula is well suited for pets with wei qi deficiency who are prone to recurrent respiratory illness, environmental sensitivities, or exercise-induced panting. Available as a concentrated powder mixed into food; cats and dogs use the Canine Blend, while horses use the Equine/Horse Blend. Dosing varies by species and body weight, and your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance.

What It Supports

  • Wei qi (defensive qi) tonification: Strengthens the body's exterior defense layer to reduce susceptibility to environmental pathogens and recurrent illness.
  • Exterior stabilization: Consolidates the surface to prevent the leakage of qi and fluids, addressing spontaneous sweating and vulnerability to wind invasion.
  • Panting and respiratory support: Helps reduce panting associated with qi deficiency and supports healthy respiratory function in dogs, cats, and horses.
  • Immune resilience: Supports pets prone to recurrent infections, seasonal sensitivities, or chronic fatigue from underlying qi deficiency.

TCVM Principles

  • Primary action: Augments the lung and spleen qi and consolidates the exterior to prevent pathogenic invasion.
  • Secondary action: Stops panting and stabilizes the wei qi layer, making it appropriate for tonification in deficient constitutions rather than acute excess conditions.

Available Forms

  • Powder - Canine Blend (for dogs and cats): Available in 75 g, 150 g, 500 g, 900 g, and 1200 g sizes; mix into food at the recommended dose for your pet's weight. Cats and dogs both use this blend.
  • Powder - Equine/Horse Blend (for horses only): Available in 150 g, 500 g, 900 g, and 1200 g sizes; mix into grain at the recommended dose for your horse.

Suggested Use

For Dogs (Canine Blend Powder):

  • Under 30 lbs: ½ tsp twice daily, or as prescribed
  • 30-80 lbs: 1 tsp twice daily, or as prescribed
  • 80-120 lbs: 1½ tsp twice daily, or as prescribed
  • Over 120 lbs: 2 tsp twice daily, or as prescribed

For Cats (Canine Blend Powder): ¼ tsp twice daily, or as prescribed

For Horses (Equine/Horse Blend, 1,000 lb horse): Two tablespoons twice daily for 20 days, then two tablespoons once daily in grain. If the horse initially refuses, start with a small amount mixed into grain and gradually increase until the horse is accustomed to the taste. Most horses will readily accept the herbs in their grain.

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

Yu Ping Feng San is a three-herb formula in which each ingredient plays a distinct and complementary role in building and securing the wei qi:

  • Huang Qi (Radix Astragali Membranacei) - Astragalus Root: The principal herb; strongly tonifies the lung and spleen qi, raises the yang, and consolidates the exterior to strengthen the body's defensive barrier against pathogenic invasion.
  • Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) - White Atractylodes Rhizome: Tonifies the spleen qi and dries dampness; supports the generation of wei qi by strengthening the spleen's role in qi production and fluid metabolism.
  • Fang Feng (Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae) - Siler Root: Expels wind and releases the exterior; acts as an envoy herb that guides Huang Qi to the surface while preventing the tonic herbs from becoming too consolidating, maintaining a balanced and open exterior.

Potential Drug Interactions

Yu Ping Feng San is a qi-tonifying formula with immune-modulating properties. Pets currently on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs and cats remains limited.

Medication categories warranting extra caution include immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, and pets managing multiple concurrent prescriptions. Your authorizing veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on your pet's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Yu Ping Feng San used for in TCVM?

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Yu Ping Feng San is indicated for wei qi deficiency patterns presenting as recurrent respiratory infections, spontaneous sweating, exercise intolerance, panting, and general vulnerability to environmental pathogens. It is a tonifying formula best suited for pets with a deficient constitution rather than acute or excess conditions. It is a good alternative to Jade Windscreen Powder, Jade Screen Eight, and Astragalus and Siler Combination.

How is Yu Ping Feng San administered to dogs, cats, and horses?

Mix the powder directly into food or grain at the dose recommended for your pet's species and body weight. Both dogs and cats use the Canine Blend; horses use the Equine/Horse Blend. Dogs and cats receive the formula twice daily; horses receive two tablespoons twice daily for the first 20 days, then once daily for maintenance. Your authorizing veterinarian will confirm the appropriate dose and schedule for your individual pet.

How long does it take to see results with Yu Ping Feng San?

As a tonifying formula, Yu Ping Feng San works gradually to build and consolidate qi over time. Many pets show improvement in energy, respiratory resilience, and panting within 3 to 6 weeks of consistent use. Pets with longstanding qi deficiency may benefit from extended use, and your veterinarian may recommend periodic reassessment to adjust the formula or dosing as your pet responds.

Can Yu Ping Feng San be combined with other TCVM formulas or conventional medications?

Combination with complementary TCVM formulas is common in holistic veterinary practice and should be guided by your authorizing veterinarian based on your pet's full pattern diagnosis. Because this formula has immune-modulating properties, veterinary oversight is especially important if your pet is on immunosuppressive medications or corticosteroids, to ensure the treatment plan fits your pet's overall health status.
