Herbsmith Sound Horse Herbal Liniment for Horses (15 fl oz Bottles - 4 Pack)

Sound Horse Herbal Liniment is a gentle herbal liniment for tired legs, tight muscles, and the kind of post-work soreness horses naturally pick up through training, hauling, showing, or daily work. It can be rubbed directly onto legs and larger muscle groups before or after exercise, used under wraps, or added to water as a soothing body brace. The formula starts with witch hazel and a light menthol blend, then layers in traditional herbs chosen to support circulation, comfort, and recovery where horses feel worked, stocked up, or a little tight. Because it is gentle on the skin, it is also a good fit for horses that do not tolerate stronger liniments well.

How to Use

Shake well before each use. Contents may settle during shipping and between uses.

  • Liniment and massage: Use full strength before and after workouts. Rub directly onto the skin of the legs or larger muscle groups. Can be painted directly on the soles of the foot.
  • Bath brace: Add 0.5 to 1 oz per gallon of water for a soothing and revitalizing body brace after work or hauling.

Ingredients

Witch Hazel, Surfactant, Menthol, and a proprietary herbal blend of: Angelica Root (Dang Gui Tou), Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Myrrh (Mo Yao), Carthamus Flower (Hong Hua), Achyranthes Root (Huai Niu Xi), Notoginseng Root (San Qi).

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

The herbal blend in Sound Horse Herbal Liniment targets Blood stasis, Qi stagnation, and musculoskeletal discomfort through a combination of Blood-moving, stasis-resolving, and tissue-supporting herbs applied topically where horses need it most.

  • Dang Gui Tou (Angelica Root - Angelica sinensis): Tonifies and invigorates Blood; the root head (Tou) portion is specifically used to invigorate Blood movement rather than the nourishing action of the body or tail sections; supports circulation to areas of stiffness and stagnation
  • Ru Xiang (Frankincense - Boswellia carterii): Invigorates Blood, promotes movement of Qi, and addresses musculoskeletal discomfort; Boswellic acids have well-documented anti-inflammatory activity in both Western research and TCVM application; a key herb for Qi and Blood stagnation with discomfort
  • Mo Yao (Myrrh - Commiphora myrrha): Invigorates Blood, dispels Blood stasis, and supports tissue healing and comfort; classically paired with Frankincense in TCVM topical formulas for traumatic injury, stagnation, and musculoskeletal discomfort - together they form the foundational Blood-moving pair of the formula
  • Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower - Carthamus tinctorius): Dispels Blood stasis, manages discomfort, and invigorates Blood; one of the strongest Blood-moving herbs in the TCVM materia medica; especially useful for stagnation with swelling and discomfort in the limbs
  • Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root - Achyranthes bidentata): Supports the bones, tendons, and joints; conducts the actions of other herbs downward to the lower limbs and hooves; a directional herb that targets the formula's benefits specifically to the lower extremities
  • San Qi (Notoginseng Root - Panax notoginseng): Transforms Blood stasis, addresses discomfort from traumatic injuries and overwork; well-researched for its effects on circulation and tissue recovery; supports resolution of bruising, swelling, and stagnation associated with athletic work and physical stress

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sound Horse Herbal Liniment only for legs?

No. While legs are the most common application site, it can be rubbed into larger muscle groups across the body before or after work - shoulders, hindquarters, back, and anywhere horses tend to carry tension or fatigue from training, hauling, or showing.

Can it be used both before and after riding?

Yes. Many people use it before work as part of their warm-up prep and again afterward to help horses cool out and recover comfortably. The formula is gentle enough for regular use at both ends of a session.

Can Sound Horse Herbal Liniment be used under wraps?

Yes. It can be used with or without leg wraps, depending on how you manage post-work leg care. Apply as normal and wrap as you would with any liniment, following your usual wrapping protocol.

What makes this different from stronger horse liniments?

Sound Horse focuses on steady herbal support through Blood-moving and stasis-resolving TCVM herbs rather than relying on high concentrations of counterirritants to create sensation. That makes it practical for regular use - before and after workouts, during hauling recovery, or as part of a body brace routine - and a good option for horses that do not tolerate more aggressive formulas on their skin.
