Recommended by holistic veterinarians, Herbsmith Rx Pueraria Support Spine is a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) herbal formula designed to support the management of cervical dysfunction and other spinal disorders arising from Blood stasis and Wind obstruction in the channels. In TCVM, the neck and spine lie along the Tai Yang channel, the channel most vulnerable to Wind invasion and Wind blockage; this ten-herb formula clears Wind from the Tai Yang channel, benefits the neck, relieves Blood stasis and stagnation, and unblocks the channels to support normal cervical and spinal function. Available in traditional powder (500g, 900g, 1200g) and Flax Plus (30-day and 60-day supply); the Flax Plus format includes a six-tablespoon scoop. Dosing varies by body weight and health condition; your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance. Not for use in pregnant mares.

Pueraria Support Spine combines ten herbs that work together to expel Wind from the Tai Yang channel, relieve Blood stasis and Qi stagnation in the cervical and spinal regions, and restore smooth channel flow through the neck and upper spine:
Herbsmith Rx Pueraria Support Spine contains Blood-moving herbs including Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, and Ji Xue Teng, as well as the Yang-warming herb Gui Zhi (Cinnamon twig), which may interact with certain medications. Horses on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in horses remains limited. Not for use in pregnant mares.
Medication categories warranting extra caution include anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications (Blood-moving herbs including Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong have additive anticoagulant properties; concurrent use warrants close veterinary monitoring), NSAIDs and other medications used for cervical and musculoskeletal discomfort, and horses managing multiple concurrent prescriptions. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on your horse's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

Pueraria Support Spine is most commonly recommended for horses with TCVM patterns of Wind obstruction combined with Blood stasis affecting the neck and spine along the Tai Yang channel. This may present as cervical stiffness, restricted neck range of motion, reluctance to flex laterally, tension in the upper back and neck musculature, or other signs consistent with Wind-Blood stasis obstruction in the cervical and spinal channels. A TCVM-trained veterinarian can confirm whether your horse's pattern is appropriate for this formula before authorization.
For the traditional powder, administer two tablespoons twice daily for the first 20 days, then two tablespoons once daily. For the Flax Plus format, administer one scoop (six-tablespoon scoop included) twice daily for the first 20 days, then one scoop daily. Mix into grain for easy administration. If the horse is reluctant to eat herbs, begin with small amounts in grain and gradually increase, or choose the Flax Plus version. Confirm dosing for horses of other weights with your authorizing veterinarian.
In TCVM, the Tai Yang channel is the outermost of the six channels and the first line of defense against external pathogenic factors, including Wind and Cold. The neck and spine lie directly along the Tai Yang channel's pathway, making them the most vulnerable region to Wind invasion and Wind-Cold obstruction. When Wind penetrates and obstructs the Tai Yang channel, Qi and Blood flow through the cervical and spinal region is impaired, leading to stiffness, muscular tension, and restricted movement. Ge Gen, Wei Ling Xian, and Qiang Huo are each specifically indicated for the Tai Yang channel and the neck region, making them the formula's core herbs for this pattern.
Because cervical dysfunction and spinal disorders involving Blood stasis and Wind obstruction vary considerably in severity and duration, response time depends on the pattern's chronicity and depth. Horses with more recent or acute cervical restriction may respond within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use; horses with longer-standing patterns may require 6 to 8 weeks or more. Long-term use is often appropriate for chronic cervical and spinal conditions, and your authorizing veterinarian will guide the appropriate course length based on your horse's response and pattern assessment.
