What It Supports

  • Damp-Heat clearance in the nasal passages: Huang Lian, Huang Qin, Yi Yi Ren, and Fu Ling form the principal Damp-Heat-clearing core, addressing the root Damp-Heat accumulation in the nasal passages and sinuses underlying nasal discharge, congestion, and sinus inflammation
  • Detoxification and Blood cooling: Huang Lian and Huang Qin resolve toxicity and cool Blood to address Heat-toxin accumulation and Blood Heat contributing to nasal inflammation, mucosal irritation, and yellow or green discharge
  • Nasal orifice opening and congestion relief: Xin Yi Hua, Cang Er Zi, and Bai Zhi are classical nasal-opening herbs that specifically direct the formula's action to the nasal passages and sinuses, addressing congestion and impaired nasal airflow associated with Damp-Heat accumulation
  • Channel opening and mucosal drainage support: Shi Chang Pu and Si Gua Luo open the sensory orifices and channels of the nasal mucosa to support drainage, airflow, and resolution of Phlegm-Damp obstruction in the nasal passages and sinuses

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

Nasal Damp Heat is a twelve-herb formula organized in five functional layers: a Damp-Heat-clearing and toxin-resolving core (Huang Lian, Huang Qin, Yi Yi Ren, Fu Ling), classical nasal-opening agents (Xin Yi Hua, Cang Er Zi, Bai Zhi), channel-opening and Phlegm-resolving herbs (Shi Chang Pu, Si Gua Luo), Damp-draining and middle Jiao-harmonizing herbs (Tong Cao, Huo Xiang), and a harmonizing envoy (Gan Cao):

  • Huang Lian (Coptis chinensis) - Coptis rhizome: The most potent Heat-clearing and toxin-resolving herb in the formula; strongly clears Heat, resolves Fire toxicity, and dries Damp in the upper Jiao, directly addressing the Heat-toxin accumulation in the nasal passages and sinuses underlying purulent or yellow-green nasal discharge
  • Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis) - Scutellaria root: Clears Heat and dries Damp; addresses Heat accumulation in the upper Jiao and Lung and supports the body's normal response to Damp-Heat patterns in the nasal mucosa, working with Huang Lian as the principal Heat-clearing pair
  • Yi Yi Ren (Coix lacryma-jobi) - Job's tears seed: Strengthens the Spleen and drains Damp; clears Heat and supports healthy fluid metabolism, addressing Damp-Heat accumulation in the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract as the primary Damp-draining herb in the formula
  • Fu Ling (Poria cocos) - Poria mushroom: Strengthens the Spleen and drains Damp; supports healthy Spleen function and fluid metabolism to address the Spleen deficiency underlying Damp accumulation in the nasal passages alongside Yi Yi Ren
  • Xin Yi Hua (Magnolia biondii) - Magnolia flower bud: Disperses Wind and opens nasal orifices; the principal nasal-opening herb in this formula, specifically directing the formula's action to the nasal passages and addressing nasal congestion and discharge alongside Cang Er Zi
  • Cang Er Zi (Xanthium sibiricum) - Xanthium fruit: Disperses Wind-Damp and opens nasal orifices; addresses nasal congestion, discharge, and sinus obstruction as the second principal nasal-opening herb alongside Xin Yi Hua
  • Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) - Dahurian angelica root: Disperses Wind-Cold and opens nasal orifices; reduces swelling and relieves nasal congestion and sinus pressure, guiding the formula's action to the nasal passages and frontal sinuses as the third nasal-directing herb
  • Shi Chang Pu (Acorus gramineus) - Acorus rhizome: Opens orifices and transforms Phlegm; clears the nasal passages and sinuses of Phlegm-Damp obstruction and guides the formula's action to the sensory orifices of the head, supporting nasal airflow and drainage
  • Si Gua Luo (Luffa cylindrica) - Luffa sponge: Opens channels and resolves Phlegm; addresses Phlegm-Damp obstruction in the channels and collaterals of the nasal passages and sinuses, supporting healthy mucosal drainage and airflow alongside Shi Chang Pu
  • Tong Cao (Tetrapanax papyrifer) - Rice paper plant pith: Promotes urination and drains Damp; clears Heat from the Lung and Stomach and supports healthy fluid distribution and Damp elimination through the urinary tract
  • Huo Xiang (Pogostemon cablin) - Patchouli herb: Transforms Damp and harmonizes the Stomach; addresses Damp accumulation in the middle Jiao and supports healthy Spleen and Stomach function alongside the Damp-draining herbs
  • Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) - Licorice root: Harmonizes all twelve herbs; clears Heat and resolves toxicity and moderates the properties of the potent Heat-clearing and Damp-drying herbs to ensure safe and balanced formula action throughout treatment

Potential Drug Interactions

Nasal Damp Heat contains potent Heat-clearing herbs, including Huang Lian (coptis rhizome) and Huang Qin (scutellaria root), which may affect hepatic drug metabolism, platelet function, and drug clearance. Pets on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs, cats, and horses remains limited.

Medication categories warranting extra caution include anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, immunosuppressive drugs, antibiotics or antiviral medications used concurrently for infectious or inflammatory nasal conditions, and pets managing multiple concurrent prescriptions. Stop administration immediately if the patient develops diarrhea, vomiting, or other unusual signs. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on your pet's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Nasal Damp Heat used for in TCVM?

Nasal Damp Heat is indicated in TCVM for Damp-Heat accumulation patterns in the nasal passages and sinuses. Holistic veterinarians commonly recommend it for dogs, cats, and horses showing signs of nasal discharge (particularly yellow, green, or thick discharge), nasal congestion, sneezing, sinus inflammation, or chronic rhinitis associated with Damp-Heat accumulation, particularly when accompanied by a red tongue with a yellow, greasy coat and a slippery, rapid pulse.

How is Nasal Damp Heat administered, and what are the dosing guidelines?

Dosing varies by species and body weight; your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance. For the 90g concentrated powder, the dose for dogs and cats is 0.1g to 0.25g per 10 to 20 lbs of body weight twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian; the small scoop holds approximately 0.4g. For horses, the standard dose is 3g (approximately 2 large scoops) twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian; the large scoop holds approximately 1.5g. For 0.5g concentrated capsules, the guideline is one capsule per 20 to 40 lbs of body weight twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian; for small dogs and cats under 10 lbs, one 0.2g capsule once daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. Mix concentrated powder directly into wet or dry food at each meal. Capsules can be given directly or hidden in food or a soft treat. Stop administration immediately if diarrhea, vomiting, or other unusual signs develop.

What makes Nasal Damp Heat specifically effective for nasal and sinus conditions?

Nasal Damp Heat includes three classical nasal-opening herbs, Xin Yi Hua (magnolia flower bud), Cang Er Zi (xanthium fruit), and Bai Zhi (dahurian angelica root), that specifically direct the formula's action to the nasal passages and sinuses. Shi Chang Pu (acorus rhizome) opens the sensory orifices of the head, and Si Gua Luo (luffa sponge) opens the channels and collaterals of the nasal mucosa to support drainage and airflow. These herbs work alongside the Damp-Heat-clearing core to address both the root Damp-Heat pattern and the branch nasal congestion and discharge.

How long does it take to see results with Nasal Damp Heat?

Results vary depending on the severity and chronicity of the Damp-Heat pattern. Many pet owners begin to notice improvements in nasal discharge, congestion, and sneezing within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use. This formula is recommended for 1 to 4 months until the problem has cleared, or as directed by your veterinarian; your veterinarian will guide reassessment intervals based on your pet's response and clinical findings.
