  • Xu Duan (Dipsacus asper) - Teasel root: Tonifies Liver and Kidney, strengthens sinews and bones, and invigorates Blood to support tissue repair and reproductive organ health
  • Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia glutinosa) - Prepared Rehmannia root: Nourishes Kidney Yin and Jing, replenishes Blood, and provides the Yin foundation that balances the formula's warming herbs
  • Gou Qi Zi (Lycium chinensis fructus) - Goji berry: Nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin, replenishes Jing, and supports vision, vitality, and reproductive health
  • He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) - Fo-Ti root: Nourishes Liver and Kidney Jing, tonifies Blood, and addresses premature aging and deficiency patterns

  • Xuan Shen (Scrophularia ningpoensis) - Figwort root: Nourishes Yin, clears Deficiency Heat, and softens areas of accumulation; supports the Yin-nourishing layer of the formula
  • Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) - Dong Quai root: Nourishes and invigorates Blood, supports reproductive organ function, and moistens sinews
  • Bai Shao Yao (Paeonia lactiflora) - White Peony root: Nourishes Blood and Yin, softens the Liver, and moderates the formula to prevent excess dryness from Yang tonics
  • Dang Shen (Codonopsis pilosula) - Codonopsis root: Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen and Lung to support energy production and digestion as a foundation for Kidney nourishment

Potential Drug Interactions

Epimedium Formula contains Blood-nourishing and Yin-building herbs (Shu Di Huang, He Shou Wu, Dang Gui) alongside Kidney Yang tonics (Yin Yang Huo, Bu Gu Zhi, Suo Yang) and Qi tonics (Huang Qi, Dang Shen). Pets on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs, cats, and horses remains limited.

Medication categories warranting extra caution include hormone or reproductive therapies, immunosuppressive drugs, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, and multiple concurrent prescription medications. Do not use in patients with acute inflammation or active infections. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on the patient's condition, medications, and laboratory results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Epimedium Formula used for in TCVM?

Epimedium Formula is used in TCVM to address patterns of Kidney Yang deficiency and Yin/Jing depletion. It is most appropriate for dogs, cats, and horses showing signs of reduced vitality, reproductive challenges, cold intolerance, low energy, weakness in the hind limbs, or premature aging associated with deficient Kidney essence. It is based on the classical Sheng Jing San formula and is named for its principal herb, Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium).

How is Epimedium Formula administered and dosed?

For horses, give 3g (2 large scoops) of powder twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. For dogs and cats using the 90g Concentrated Powder, give 0.1g to 0.25g per 10 to 20 lb body weight twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. For capsule formats, give one 0.5g capsule per 20 to 40 lb body weight twice daily; for small dogs and cats under 10 lbs, give one 0.2g capsule once daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. Mix powder into food or hide capsules and teapills in a soft treat for easy administration. Use for up to 6 months, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Are there any contraindications or safety concerns?

Epimedium Formula should not be used in patients with acute inflammation or active infections (Excess Heat patterns), as the warming Yang tonics in the formula may exacerbate these conditions. Pets on hormone therapies, immunosuppressive medications, anticoagulants, or multiple concurrent prescriptions should use this formula only under direct veterinary supervision. This formula requires veterinary authorization before use.

How does Epimedium Formula support both Yang tonification and Yin nourishment simultaneously?

The formula's design reflects the classical TCVM principle that Yin and Yang are interdependent: Yang cannot be sustainably tonified without an adequate Yin foundation. Warming Yang herbs like Yin Yang Huo, Bu Gu Zhi, and Suo Yang are balanced by Yin- and Jing-nourishing herbs such as Shu Di Huang, Gou Qi Zi, He Shou Wu, and Mai Men Dong. This prevents the dryness and Deficiency Heat that can arise from Yang tonics used alone, making the formula appropriate for long-term constitutional support.

Amazing supplement

I haven’t seen this anywhere else online so I just wanted to leave review to let other people know that this is a great supplement for kidney disease in dogs. My dog is nine years old and was born with kidney disease, his bloodwork improved dramatically using this and it’s part of the reason why he’s been healthy for so long.
