What It Supports

  • Blood activation: Invigorates Blood and promotes smooth Blood flow through the cervical and neck channels, addressing the Blood stagnation component of cervical Qi and Blood obstruction patterns
  • Qi movement: Moves Qi and resolves Qi stagnation in the cervical, upper back, and Bladder channels, addressing the Qi obstruction that underlies cervical stiffness, tension, and restricted mobility
  • Stagnation dissipation: Dissipates Qi and Blood stagnation in the cervical channels and tissues, addressing the combined stagnation pattern that generates cervical discomfort and restricted neck movement
  • Sinew relaxation: Relaxes the sinews and alleviates spasm and tension in the cervical muscles and tendons through the formula's sinew-relaxing herbs
  • Wind-Damp dispelling: Dispels Wind-Damp from the cervical and upper back channels, addressing the Wind-Damp component that often accompanies or contributes to cervical Qi and Blood stagnation patterns

TCVM Principles

  • Primary action: Activate Blood, move Qi, dissipate stagnation

Active Ingredient TCVM Actions

Cervical Formula is a nine-herb formula combining Blood-invigorating, Qi-moving, channel-warming, sinew-relaxing, and Wind-Damp-dispelling herbs specifically selected for Qi and Blood stagnation patterns in the cervical and upper back channels:

  • Ge Gen (Pueraria lobata) - Kudzu root: Chief herb with a specific affinity for the cervical and upper back channels; releases muscle tension, raises Yang, and opens the Tai Yang and Yang Ming channels of the neck and upper back; the most important single herb in the Chinese materia medica for cervical channel stiffness and tension, with a classical and modern clinical use specifically for neck and upper back channel obstruction
  • Gui Zhi (Cinnamomum cassia) - Cinnamon twig: Warms and unblocks the channels, disperses Cold, and assists Yang; the formula's primary channel-warming herb, opening the Tai Yang channel and promoting Qi and Blood flow through the cervical and upper back channels; works with Ge Gen as the primary Tai Yang channel-opening pair
  • Qiang Huo (Notopterygium incisium) - Notopterygium rhizome: Dispels Wind-Cold-Damp, opens the Tai Yang channel, and relieves bi syndrome in the upper body; the formula's primary Wind-Damp-dispelling herb, with a strong affinity for the upper body channels, particularly the neck, shoulders, and upper back Tai Yang channel layer
  • Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) - Ligusticum rhizome: Invigorates Blood, moves Qi, and dispels Wind; the formula's primary Blood-invigorating and Qi-moving herb, addressing the Blood stagnation and Qi obstruction component of cervical channel stagnation; its upward-moving nature gives it a specific affinity for the head, neck, and upper body channels
  • Ji Xue Teng (Millettia reticulata) - Millettia stem: Nourishes Blood, invigorates Blood, and promotes smooth Blood flow through the channels; works with Chuan Xiong as the primary Blood-invigorating pair, addressing Blood stagnation in the cervical channels with a Blood-nourishing action that prevents over-dispersion of Blood
  • Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) - Dong Quai root: Nourishes Blood, invigorates Blood, and resolves Blood stagnation; the formula's primary Blood-nourishing herb, ensuring the Blood-invigorating and channel-warming herbs do not deplete Blood while addressing the stagnation in the cervical channels
  • Bai Shao Yao (Paeonia lactiflora) - White Peony root: Nourishes Blood, softens the Liver, and alleviates spasm; the formula's primary sinew-nourishing and spasm-alleviating herb, addressing the cervical muscle tension and spasm component of the pattern and nourishing the Liver Blood that moistens and nourishes the sinews
  • Mu Gua (Chaenomeles speciosa) - Chinese Quince fruit: Relaxes the sinews, relieves spasm, resolves Damp, and strengthens the sinews and tendons; works with Bai Shao Yao as the primary sinew-relaxing pair, addressing the sinew stiffness and tension component of cervical channel obstruction
  • Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) - Licorice root: Harmonizes the formula, moderates the actions of the other herbs, and alleviates spasm; the formula's harmonizing envoy, moderating the acrid, moving, and warming herbs and ensuring the formula's combined actions are balanced and well-tolerated

Potential Drug Interactions

Cervical Formula contains Blood-invigorating herbs (Chuan Xiong, Ji Xue Teng, Dang Gui), channel-warming herbs (Gui Zhi), Wind-Damp-dispelling herbs (Qiang Huo), sinew-relaxing herbs (Bai Shao Yao, Mu Gua), and a harmonizing herb (Gan Cao) that may interact with certain medications. Gan Cao (Licorice root) may interact with diuretic and antihypertensive medications with long-term use. Pets on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as herb-drug interaction research in dogs, cats, and horses remains limited.

Medication categories warranting extra caution include anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, diuretic medications (with long-term Gan Cao use), and multiple concurrent prescription medications. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on the patient's condition, medications, and diagnostic results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cervical Formula used for in TCVM?

Cervical Formula is used in TCVM for Qi and Blood stagnation patterns in the cervical and upper back channels - a pattern common in dogs, cats, and horses with neck stiffness, restricted cervical mobility, cervical muscle tension, and upper back channel obstruction. In TCVM, the cervical and upper back channels are primarily governed by the Tai Yang channel system, which is the body's outermost channel layer and is particularly susceptible to Wind-Cold-Damp invasion and Qi and Blood stagnation from trauma, overuse, or chronic obstruction. Cervical Formula addresses both the Qi and Blood stagnation root and the Wind-Damp component that often accompanies cervical channel obstruction. The manufacturer lists no contraindications for this formula.

How is Cervical Formula administered and dosed?

For horses, give 3g (2.5 large scoops) of concentrated powder twice daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. For dogs and cats using the 90g Concentrated Powder, give 0.1g to 0.25g per 10 to 20 lb body weight twice daily; the small scoop holds approximately 0.3g. For the 0.5g Concentrated Capsule format, give one capsule per 20 to 40 lb body weight twice daily; for small dogs and cats under 10 lbs, give one 0.2g concentrated capsule once daily, or as directed by your veterinarian. Teapills can be hidden in food or a soft treat. For the 200g and 600g standard powder formats, dosing is higher per body weight than the concentrated formats - consult your veterinarian for specific guidance.

What is the role of Ge Gen (Kudzu root) in Cervical Formula?

Ge Gen (Pueraria lobata, Kudzu root) is the chief herb of Cervical Formula and is one of the most important herbs in the Chinese materia medica specifically for cervical and upper back channel obstruction. Its properties include releasing muscle tension and stiffness, raising Yang, and opening the Tai Yang and Yang Ming channels of the neck and upper back. In TCVM, Ge Gen is considered to have a strong affinity for the cervical channel layer, making it the primary herb for neck stiffness, restricted cervical mobility, and upper back tension associated with Tai Yang channel obstruction. It is frequently paired with Gui Zhi (Cinnamon twig) as the classical Ge Gen - Gui Zhi combination for Tai Yang channel stiffness with channel-warming, a pairing drawn from the Ge Gen Tang formulas of the classical Shang Han Lun tradition.

What is the difference between the concentrated and standard powder formats of Cervical Formula?

The 90g Concentrated Powder is a highly concentrated granule format where a small amount of powder delivers the full therapeutic dose - the small scoop holds approximately 0.3g, and the typical dose for a medium dog is 0.1g to 0.25g per 10 to 20 lb body weight. The 200g and 600g formats are standard non-concentrated powders where the dose per body weight is significantly higher to achieve the same therapeutic effect. The concentrated formats are generally more convenient for small and medium dogs and cats where precise small-dose measurement is important; the standard powder formats may be preferred for horses or large dogs where larger volumes are easier to administer and measure. Your veterinarian will advise on which format and dose is most appropriate for your pet's size and administration preferences.
