Herbsmith Bladder Care Bladder Support Supplement for Dogs & Cats

A triple-defense formula with cranberry, D-mannose, and heat-draining herbs to support normal pH, discourage bacteria, and maintain healthy bladder function in dogs and cats. Ideal for pets prone to recurring UTIs, struvite crystals, or urinary discomfort.

Behind the Formula

In TCVM, recurrent urinary tract infections, crystals in the urine, urinary obstructions, and stone formation are all understood as Bladder Damp-Heat. Damp-Heat invades the bladder wall and shifts the internal environment of the bladder - changing pH, promoting crystal formation, and creating conditions favorable to bacterial invasion. Cooling and draining herbs address the root pattern directly, while cranberry extract and D-mannose protect the bladder wall from a Western nutritional perspective. When bladder pH swings too acidic or too alkaline, bacteria flourish and discomfort follows. Bladder Care uses this combined approach to help maintain normal pH, support healthy urine flow, and make the bladder a less welcoming place for bacteria. Daily use is ideal for dogs or cats prone to recurring UTIs or struvite crystals.

When to Use Bladder Care

  • Supporting bladder health: Supports a balanced bladder environment for daily urinary comfort.
  • UTI prevention: Cranberry and D-mannose help discourage bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall.
  • Deterring crystal formation: Supports healthy pH and urine flow, which may help discourage struvite crystal development.
  • Regular urination: Supports comfortable, complete urination by helping maintain normal flow and easing irritation.
  • Healthy urinary tract: Helps maintain a comfortable, balanced urinary tract environment for dogs and cats.

Bladder Care vs. The Rest

Most bladder supplements take a single-angle approach - cranberry alone, D-mannose alone, or simple PACs. Bladder Care supports bladder health from multiple directions by combining cranberry, D-mannose, and heat-draining herbs. This helps maintain normal pH, discourage bacteria, support comfortable urination, and promote a healthier urinary environment for dogs and cats prone to recurring issues.

Active Ingredients and Their Actions

  • Hua Shi (Talcum - Talcum powder): One of the primary herbs for Bladder Damp-Heat in TCVM; clears Heat, drains Dampness, and promotes urination. Hua Shi is the chief herb in Ba Zheng San, one of the most classical TCVM formulas for urinary heat and dysuria. Acts as a demulcent and promotes the smooth flow of urine through the urinary tract.
  • Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed - Plantago asiatica): Clears Bladder Heat, drains Dampness, and promotes urination; also clears Liver Heat and benefits the eyes. One of the most commonly used TCVM herbs for urinary Damp-Heat, struvite crystals, and dysuria. Modern research supports anti-inflammatory and diuretic activity through iridoid glycoside constituents including aucubin and acteoside.
  • Qu Mai (Dianthus - Dianthus superbus): Drains Dampness and Heat through urination, unblocks urinary painful obstruction (lin syndrome), and moves Blood stasis in the lower jiao. Particularly useful for presentations of urinary difficulty with a Heat pattern. Contraindicated in pregnancy - reflects the formula's pregnancy caution.
  • Bian Xu (Polygonum - Polygonum aviculare): Clears Damp-Heat in the Bladder, promotes urination, and drains Dampness; used classically for urinary difficulty and lin syndrome with a Heat presentation. Also has documented antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory activity in modern research through flavonoid and tannin constituents.
  • Zhi Zi (Gardenia - Gardenia jasminoides): Clears Heat and drains Fire from the Triple Burner; cools Bladder Heat, resolves Damp-Heat, and calms irritation in the urinary tract. Genipin, the primary active constituent, has well-documented anti-inflammatory activity and supports the formula's Heat-clearing action from a Western pharmacological perspective.
  • Gan Cao (Licorice Root - Glycyrrhiza uralensis): Harmonizes the actions of all herbs in the formula, moderates the draining nature of the cooling herbs, and soothes irritated mucous membranes. Glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizic acid provide anti-inflammatory and demulcent activity in the urinary tract; Gan Cao is the classical harmonizer in multi-herb TCVM formulas.
  • Cranberry Extract: Provides proanthocyanidins (PACs) - specifically A-type PACs - that interfere with bacterial fimbriae adhesion, preventing E. coli and other bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall epithelium. This anti-adhesion mechanism makes cranberry effective at discouraging bacterial colonization without antibiotic activity. Works alongside D-mannose for complementary anti-adhesion coverage.
  • D-Mannose: A naturally occurring simple sugar that binds to the mannose-specific fimbriae of E. coli in the urine, saturating the bacterial binding sites and preventing attachment to uroepithelial cells. Bacteria are then flushed out with normal urination rather than adhering to the bladder wall. Provides rapid anti-adhesion support that complements the slower-acting pH and Heat-draining herb actions.
  • Flaxseed (carrier - powder format): Serves as the powder carrier; provides demulcent mucilage that may help soothe the urinary tract alongside the active ingredients, plus ALA omega-3s and dietary fiber.

Directions for Use

Sprinkle the recommended powder amount over every meal, or offer as a treat mixed into a small meat patty, stirred into cottage cheese, or frozen into broth cubes. Give twice daily. Tablets can be given with food or hidden in a treat.

Why give it every day? Bladder balance is not something the body fixes in a single dose. Daily use helps maintain normal pH, support healthy urine flow, and keep the bladder environment less welcoming to bacteria. For pets prone to recurring UTIs or crystals, consistency is what keeps everything working the way it should.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bladder Care be used long-term?

Absolutely. It is designed for safe, daily use to help maintain a balanced bladder environment, support healthy pH, and discourage recurring urinary issues over time, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Can I use Bladder Care alongside a prescription diet or another approach?

Possibly - it depends on your pet's specific needs and the prescription diet's pH targets. Contact Herbsmith at info@herbsmithinc.com or 1-800-624-6429 so Dr. Bessent can review your pet's history and provide personalized guidance, or consult your veterinarian directly.

Will Bladder Care help with incontinence?

Not directly. Incontinence is best supported with Bladder Hold, which addresses tone and control. However, pets with incontinence are more prone to UTIs, so Bladder Care can still support their urinary tract by helping maintain a less hospitable bladder environment for bacteria, or as directed by your veterinarian.

How long before I might see improvement?

Some pets show early signs of improved comfort or easier urination within 3-4 weeks of consistent daily use. The benefits build with time - daily consistency is what provides the most meaningful long-term support, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Can Bladder Care be used alongside antibiotics?

Yes. Many veterinarians pair urinary-support supplements with antibiotics to support comfort and help maintain a healthier bladder environment. When using both, simply separate the supplement and medication doses unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.

Can cats use Bladder Care?

Yes - the formula is safe for both dogs and cats. Use the feline dosage chart for accurate feeding amounts. Bladder Damp-Heat is a common TCVM pattern in cats, particularly those prone to feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), struvite crystals, or recurrent cystitis, or as directed by your veterinarian.
