In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, all foods carry a thermal nature - Warming, Cooling, or Neutral - that influences the body's internal temperature and energy balance. Cooling foods reduce excess Heat, nourish Yin, and calm patterns of inflammation, restlessness, and heat accumulation. Side by Side Duck Patties are formulated so that 75% of ingredients by weight are Cooling, making this the most constitutionally specific of the Side by Side diet options. Duck is one of the most clinically important Cooling proteins in TCVM food therapy - particularly appropriate as a dietary anchor for dogs on herbal protocols targeting Yin deficiency, Liver Fire, or Hot Bi syndrome.
Duck w/ Bone, Pork Hearts, Duck Gizzards, Duck Livers, Broccoli, Apples, Celery, Spinach, Mangoes, Flaxseed Oil, Dried Yeast, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Quinoa, Kelp, Sesame Seeds, Chia Seeds, Carrots, Tomatoes, Shiitake Mushrooms, Oranges, Cranberries, Pumpkin, Beets, Tart Cherries, Strawberries, Blueberries, Sunflower Oil, Mixed Tocopherols (as natural preservative).

For quicker rehydration, crumble the patties first. Feed as a complete and balanced meal, or use as a fresh food mixer by substituting 25% of your dog's current food with Side by Side, or as directed by your veterinarian. Clean all surfaces, bowls, and hands thoroughly after each meal.

Hot or Warm constitutional dogs tend to seek cool surfaces and shade, have a red or dark pink tongue (rather than pale pink), have warm or hot ears and belly, pant excessively even at rest, are restless or reactive, and may show recurring skin inflammation, hot spots, or seasonal allergy flares. Dogs with Yin deficiency may also show night restlessness, dry coat, or chronic thirst. If your dog fits several of these signs, a Cooling protein like duck is likely appropriate. A holistic or TCVM veterinarian can confirm your dog's constitution, or as directed by your veterinarian.
Duck is both a Cooling protein in TCVM and a novel protein in conventional veterinary nutrition - meaning most dogs have not been previously exposed to it, making it less likely to trigger an acquired food sensitivity. TCVM explains the benefit further: itchy skin, recurring hot spots, and inflammation are often associated with Blood Heat or Yin deficiency patterns, which Cooling proteins like duck directly address at the constitutional level. Feeding a Cooling diet is part of the standard TCVM dietary recommendation for these presentations alongside herbal and acupuncture protocols, or as directed by your veterinarian.
Yes. Substitute 25% of your dog's current food with Side by Side Duck Patties to introduce Cooling thermal support without a full diet transition. See the feeding table above for patty counts by body weight. This is a practical first step for owners whose Hot or itchy dogs are currently on a thermally inappropriate diet, allowing the constitutional shift to begin before committing to a complete change, or as directed by your veterinarian.
All vitamins and minerals in Side by Side Duck Patties come from the whole-food ingredients - duck organs, vegetables, seeds, fruits, and marine sources - rather than a synthetic premix added after processing. Duck liver provides vitamin A, B12, and iron; kelp provides iodine; flaxseed oil provides ALA; and pork heart provides CoQ10 and taurine - all in bioavailable whole-food forms that the body utilizes more efficiently than isolated synthetic equivalents, or as directed by your veterinarian.
Hi, why do you put pork in a duck formula? Just wondering. :) Thank you!
Hi! Thank you for your question!
Foods that contain a high moisture content such as Pork Heart, will help cool your pup down when they are experiencing irritating inflammatory symptoms. In cooling formulas we want the dog to have multiple cooling ingredients contributing to make the overall energetically cooling effect stronger.
While Duck is a good source of protein, iron, selenium, B vitamins, and zinc.
