Red Lung is a nine-herb formula built around Huang Qin as the principal Fire-clearing herb, combining Yin-nourishing, Phlegm-transforming, and Qi and Blood-moving deputies to clear Lung Fire comprehensively at the root and branch level:
Red Lung contains Heat-clearing and Blood-invigorating herbs, including Huang Qin (Scutellaria) and Dan Shen (Chinese salvia), which may affect platelet function, coagulation, and drug metabolism. This formula may also cause a positive result on drug tests in horses. Pets on prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision, as research on herb-drug interactions in dogs and cats remains limited.
Medication categories warranting extra caution include anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, cardiac medications, antibiotics or antiviral drugs used concurrently for respiratory conditions, immunosuppressive drugs, and pets managing multiple concurrent prescriptions. Use with caution during pregnancy. Do not administer to horses prior to racing or competition. Your veterinarian can determine appropriateness based on your pet's condition, current medications, and laboratory results.

Red Lung is indicated in TCVM for Lung Fire and Lung Heat patterns. Holistic veterinarians frequently recommend it for dogs, cats, and horses showing signs of respiratory discomfort, dry or productive cough with Heat signs, nasal discharge, throat irritation, or chronic respiratory conditions rooted in Lung Heat or Phlegm-Fire accumulation, particularly when accompanied by a red tongue with a yellow coat and a rapid, slippery pulse. Use with caution during pregnancy.
Dosing varies by species and body weight; your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance. For the 90g concentrated powder, the dose for dogs and cats is 0.5 to 1 small scoop per 10 to 20 lbs twice daily; the small scoop holds approximately 0.25g. For horses, the standard dose is 3g (approximately 3 large scoops) twice daily; the large scoop holds approximately 1g. Mix the powder directly into wet or dry food at each meal. The 600g bulk powder is suited for horses or extended use. Stop administration immediately if diarrhea or other unusual signs develop.
Zhi Sou San moistens the Lung and transforms Phlegm, making it appropriate for Lung Yin deficiency patterns with dryness and chronic cough without strong Heat signs. Red Lung clears Fire and cools the Lung, making it appropriate for acute or active Lung Heat and Fire patterns with Hot-type respiratory signs such as a red tongue with yellow coat and a rapid pulse. Your authorizing veterinarian will determine which formula best matches your pet's TCVM pattern based on tongue, pulse, and clinical presentation.
Response time varies depending on the acuity and chronicity of the Lung Fire pattern. For acute Lung Heat presentations, many pet owners begin to notice improvements in respiratory comfort and energy within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use. For chronic or recurring patterns, we typically recommend longer-term use under veterinary guidance. Regular follow-up with your holistic veterinarian is recommended to reassess the TCVM pattern and adjust the protocol as needed.
