Cool the Blood is organized around three functional groups: herbs that protect Yin and clear Heat from the deepest Ying and Blood layers, herbs that expel Heat from the Qi and Wei layers, and herbs that cool and mobilize Blood while calming the Spirit.
Cool the Blood contains several potent Chinese herbs, including strongly Heat-clearing, Blood-cooling, and Blood-moving herbs (notably Da Huang, Huang Lian, and Dan Shen) with known cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and immune-modulating activity. Because herb-drug interaction research in dogs and cats is limited, pets taking prescription medications should use this formula under veterinary supervision. Avoid use in animals with signs of Dampness or Cold.
Extra caution may be appropriate for pets receiving anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, cardiac medications, gastrointestinal medications, immunosuppressive drugs, or multiple prescription medications. Your veterinarian can determine whether Cool the Blood is appropriate based on your pet's condition, medications, and laboratory results.

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Cool the Blood (Qing Ying Tang) is traditionally used to cool Blood, protect Yin, and expel Heat invasions from the deepest Ying and Blood layers back out to the most superficial Wei and Qi layers. It is indicated for patterns of Blood stagnation and Heat in the Blood, commonly used to support healthy skin, a healthy immune system, and emotional calm in dogs and cats.
Cool the Blood is available in liquid extract (1 oz, 4 oz, or 8 oz) or 500mg tablets (60, 120, or 300 count). Liquid can be mixed into food or administered directly; tablets can be given directly or hidden in food. Dosing varies by species and body weight; your authorizing veterinarian will provide specific guidance.
Results vary by individual and the severity of the pattern. Some animals may show improvement in skin comfort and heat sensitivity relatively quickly, while those with more chronic or established Heat in the Blood patterns may require several weeks of consistent use. Your authorizing veterinarian can help set appropriate expectations based on your pet's TCVM diagnosis.
Always consult your veterinarian before combining Cool the Blood with other medications or supplements. Your authorizing veterinarian will monitor for potential interactions through routine lab work and diagnostic testing. Key interactions to discuss include anticoagulants, cardiac medications, and gastrointestinal medications. See the Potential Drug Interactions section above for details.
