Complete and balanced freeze-dried raw duck patties for dogs, formulated using TCVM food energetics principles. This Cooling formula is 75% Cool ingredients - the most thermally Cooling diet in the Side by Side lineup, and the strongest constitutional fit for Hot or Warm dogs, dogs with Yin deficiency, or dogs with inflammation-driven patterns, including allergies, skin conditions, behavioral heat signs, and Hot Bi syndrome. Packed with essential nutrients derived from whole foods. No synthetic vitamins or minerals, no artificial flavors, colors, or extracts. Locally sourced ingredients. Rehydrates easily with water or broth. Made in the USA.

What Is Food Energetics?

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, all foods carry a thermal nature - Warming, Cooling, or Neutral - that influences the body's internal temperature and energy balance. Cooling foods reduce excess Heat, nourish Yin, and calm patterns of inflammation, restlessness, and heat accumulation. Side by Side Duck Patties are formulated so that 75% of ingredients by weight are Cooling, making this the most constitutionally specific of the Side by Side diet options. Duck is one of the most clinically important Cooling proteins in TCVM food therapy - particularly appropriate as a dietary anchor for dogs on herbal protocols targeting Yin deficiency, Liver Fire, or Hot Bi syndrome.

TCVM Thermal Profile

  • Thermal nature: Cooling
  • Ingredient energetics: Cool 75% (Duck w/ Bone, Duck Gizzards, Duck Livers, Alfalfa, Blueberries, Broccoli, Celery, Chia Seeds, Cranberries, Flaxseed Oil, Kelp, Mangoes, Oranges, Spinach, Strawberries, Tomatoes); Neutral 24.5% (Apples, Beets, Carrots, Dried Yeast, Pork Hearts, Quinoa, Sesame Seeds, Shiitake Mushrooms, Sunflower Seeds); Warm 0.5% (Pumpkin, Pumpkin Seeds, Tart Cherries)
  • Primary TCVM action: Clears Heat, nourishes Yin, calms Liver Fire, cools Blood Heat, supports Kidney Yin, addresses Hot Bi syndrome
  • Indicated for: Yin deficiency, Liver Fire rising, Blood Heat, Hot Bi syndrome, Hot constitution dogs
  • Ideal for dogs that: Seek cool surfaces and shade, have a red or dark pink tongue, pant excessively, are restless or irritable, have hot ears and a warm belly, show seasonal allergy flares, experience skin inflammation or recurring hot spots, or have behavioral reactivity with Heat signs
  • Supports: Skin and coat health, healthy inflammatory response, joint comfort, digestive balance, cardiovascular health, weight management, behavioral calm with Heat pattern, and allergy management through constitutional dietary correction

Ingredient Highlights

  • Duck w/ Bone, Duck Gizzards, and Duck Livers: Three Cool duck sources form the protein foundation of this formula. Duck is one of the most clinically important cooling proteins in TCVM food therapy. Duck liver is rich in B12, iron, vitamin A, and fat-soluble vitamins; duck gizzard is a lean, zinc-rich muscle organ associated with Spleen and Stomach support; duck with bone provides calcium, phosphorus, and collagen alongside the primary Cool protein
  • Cranberries: A Cool berry rich in minerals and polyphenols; supports cardiovascular health, healthy circulation, and a normal inflammatory response. Their Cool nature reinforces the thermal intent of the formula
  • Flaxseed Oil: A Cool source of ALA omega-3 fatty acids; supports healthy skin and coat and a normal inflammatory response. As the primary fat supplement in this formula, it reinforces the Cool thermal direction alongside the duck-based proteins
  • Pork Hearts: A Neutral organ meat that contributes CoQ10, taurine, B12, and iron without thermally counteracting the Cooling base. In TCVM, pork heart nourishes Heart Qi and is associated with cardiovascular support
  • Shiitake Mushrooms: A Neutral adaptogenic fungus rich in B and D vitamins and beta-glucan polysaccharides; supports immune function and cardiovascular health without adding thermal weight in either direction

How to Feed

You can feed our patties dry or rehydrated. To rehydrate, add warm water or bone broth to suit your dog's preference (approximately 2 tbsp per patty). For quicker rehydration, crumble the patties first. Feed as a complete and balanced meal, or use as a fresh food mixer by substituting 25% of your dog's current food with Side by Side, or as directed by your veterinarian. Clean all surfaces, bowls, and hands thoroughly after each meal.

Daily Feeding Guidelines (patties per day):

Dog Weight As a Mixer (25% of diet) As a Meal

30 lbs 4 15
40 lbs 5 18
60 lbs 6 25

As a Mixer = replacing 25% of current food with Side by Side freeze-dried recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my dog needs a Cooling diet?

Hot or Warm constitutional dogs tend to seek cool surfaces and shade, have a red or dark pink tongue (rather than pale pink), have warm or hot ears and belly, pant excessively even at rest, are restless or reactive, and may show recurring skin inflammation, hot spots, or seasonal allergy flares. Dogs with Yin deficiency may also show night restlessness, dry coat, or chronic thirst. If your dog fits several of these signs, a Cooling protein like duck is likely appropriate. A holistic or TCVM veterinarian can confirm your dog's constitution, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Why is duck such a common protein recommendation for allergic or itchy dogs?

Duck is both a Cooling protein in TCVM and a novel protein in conventional veterinary nutrition - meaning most dogs have not been previously exposed to it, making it less likely to trigger an acquired food sensitivity. TCVM explains the benefit further: itchy skin, recurring hot spots, and inflammation are often associated with Blood Heat or Yin deficiency patterns, which Cooling proteins like duck directly address at the constitutional level. Feeding a Cooling diet is part of the standard TCVM dietary recommendation for these presentations alongside herbal and acupuncture protocols, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Can I use these patties as a topper instead of a full meal?

Yes. Substitute 25% of your dog's current food with Side by Side Duck Patties to introduce Cooling thermal support without a full diet transition. See the feeding table above for patty counts by body weight. This is a practical first step for owners whose Hot or itchy dogs are currently on a thermally inappropriate diet, allowing the constitutional shift to begin before committing to a complete change, or as directed by your veterinarian.

Why no synthetic vitamins or minerals?

All vitamins and minerals in Side by Side Duck Patties come from the whole-food ingredients - duck organs, vegetables, seeds, fruits, and marine sources - rather than a synthetic premix added after processing. Duck liver provides vitamin A, B12, and iron; kelp provides iodine; flaxseed oil provides ALA; and pork heart provides CoQ10 and taurine - all in bioavailable whole-food forms that the body utilizes more efficiently than isolated synthetic equivalents, or as directed by your veterinarian.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Hi, why do you put pork in a duck formula? Just wondering. :) Thank you!

Hi! Thank you for your question!

Foods that contain a high moisture content such as Pork Heart, will help cool your pup down when they are experiencing irritating inflammatory symptoms. In cooling formulas we want the dog to have multiple cooling ingredients contributing to make the overall energetically cooling effect stronger.

While Duck is a good source of protein, iron, selenium, B vitamins, and zinc.
